Architecture blends design with engineering. It covers subjects like structural systems, materials, and spatial planning, forming the base of most architecture course subjects taught in India. Today, as many as 1.45 lakh architects are registered in the country, according to the registers of the Council of Architecture as of October 2026. This figure is still increasing, with some students taking up architecture courses after 12th each year. The Council also sets the rules for eligibility, curriculum and accreditation so a degree from any recognised institute carries the same professional value. Architecture: Definition, Styles & Types

In the simplest terms, architecture is the art and science of designing a physical structure that will serve its purpose and last for a long time. This has evolved with time. Culture, available materials, and the technology of a given era have all shaped how buildings are designed, which is why the field has moved through several distinct styles. Some of these are frequently encountered in architecture design courses:

Classical architecture: Based on symmetry and columned facades, much of it inspired by the design of ancient Greece and Roman architecture.
Gothic style: Pointed arches, ribbed vaults, tall spires. The most clear examples remain the cathedrals of Europe.
Modernist architecture: Removes ornament, and uses glass, steel and concrete instead.
Sustainable or green architecture: This places a strong emphasis on energy efficiency and eco-friendly materials, a trend that is becoming increasingly popular in the world of architecture education in India.
Vernacular architecture: Shaped by regional tradition, seen in India’s courtyard homes and old stepwells.

These styles are usually where design education starts, before students move into more technical, applied coursework.

Different Types of Architecture

There are also specialisations in architecture, besides the styles. The majority of students select a focus to suit their interests rather than following one fixed pathway. A few common ones:

Residential architecture: Homes, flats, housing developments.
Commercial architecture: Offices, retail space and mixed use buildings.
Landscape architecture: Design of landscapes (outdoor spaces, parks, site layout).
Interior architecture: How indoor spaces are organised and how they feel to use.
Urban Planning and Design: Designs at a larger scale, which shapes cities and public infrastructure.

At the center all of these make use of the same subjects for architecture courses. More advanced knowledge is acquired later on, through elective courses, internships or post graduate studies.

Best Architecture Courses in India 2026

Choosing a course comes down to architecture courses eligibility, the entrance exam required, and how much time a student can commit. The table below lists the leading options in India.

Course	Duration	Eligibility	Entrance Exam
Full-Stack BIM Professional Course for Architects by BuildAmbit	7 months	Practicing architects and architecture graduates (0–5 years’ experience)	No entrance exam; portfolio/profile-based enrollment
B.Arch (Bachelor of Architecture)	5 years	10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics (min. 50% aggregate), or a 10+3 diploma with Mathematics	NATA or JEE Main Paper 2
M.Arch (Master of Architecture)	2 years	B.Arch degree from a CoA-recognised institute with min. 50% marks	GATE (Architecture & Planning) or CEED
Diploma in Architecture	3–4 years	10th pass with Mathematics as a subject	State-level polytechnic entrance exams (varies by state)

BuildAmbit’s Full-Stack BIM Professional Course for Architects, developed with RSP Design India, suits those who already hold a design background and want to apply Building Information Modeling (BIM) on live projects. The course includes:

Duration: 7 months, delivered fully online with live studio sessions and mentors from the industry.
Structure: 5 studios and 13 modules, concluding with an RSP-executed capstone project for the portfolio.
Software: A Revit architecture course component alongside AutoCAD, Autodesk Construction Cloud, Navisworks, Dynamo, Twinmotion, and Rhino.Inside.Revit.
Backing: RSP Design India contributes 650+ practising AEC professionals, 29+ years of project leadership, and 75+ LEED Platinum and Gold projects.
Support: 100% placement assistance, mentorship and portfolio development.

The program is designed to accommodate architects and architecture graduates seeking practical training which focuses on the use of real project procedures and not just software training.

B.Arch is still the standard entry point for students going into the profession after school. M.Arch comes later for people who wish to specialise in other areas like urban design, sustainable architecture or conservation. Architecture course duration for these degree programs runs longer, since they build both theory and design skills from the beginning.

Where a full academic degree is not the goal, shorter, skill-focused programs such as BuildAmbit’s course offer a faster route in. Fees are not fixed either. Architecture course fees for B.Arch and M.Arch can start around a few lakhs and climb well beyond that, depending on the institute, while professional courses are priced by training depth and the placement support included.

What are the Benefits of Studying Architecture Courses and Building a Career in the Field of Architecture?

Studying architecture leads to more than design-focused roles alone. The problem-solving, spatial thinking and project management skills acquired in architecture courses transfer into work in construction and real estate in general. Some of the direct benefits:

A wide range of career options: The roles range from architect to interior designer, BIM coordinator to urban planner.
International relevance: Architecture design courses taught in India follow international standards, thus aiding in working abroad.

Growing digital demand: BIM and Revit modelling skills are increasingly expected across firms, making online architecture courses in this area a worthwhile investment.
A balance of creativity and stability: Architecture allows for creative work while staying tied to India’s steadily growing infrastructure sector.

The advantages of these make architecture a viable option for students who like to engage with design on both a creative and technical level.

Architecture Careers in India: Your Path to a Successful Future

India continues to grow and the requirement of trained architects and BIM professionals never slack. After a B.Arch or a specialised course, Most of the graduates begin their careers as architects, project coordinators, BIM modelers, interior designers or urban planners in the first few years after graduation. Some move into narrower fields later on, sustainability consulting and heritage conservation being two common ones.

Programs built around real project work, BuildAmbit’s course among them, give students exposure to actual project files early, and that tends to make the shift into a BIM role easier. Employers, after all, are looking for people who can work inside Autodesk Revit files, not just talk about the software. A strong portfolio still matters most in the end, whether it comes from coursework or applied studio projects, since that is usually what gets someone their first job.

Conclusion

Architecture asks for both creativity and technical skill, and India’s building boom is not slowing down anytime soon. A traditional B.Arch, a specialised M.Arch, or a targeted, industry-aligned program can all work, depending on where a student stands and what they want out of the field. For training built around real project workflows, BuildAmbit’s courses are designed around practical application rather than theory alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is Architecture Course?

An architecture course teaches students to design buildings and spaces, with subjects like structural systems, materials, and design principles built in. Some are full academic degrees, B.Arch being the standard example. Others are shorter and skill-based, like BuildAmbit’s BIM course, aimed at professionals already working in the field.

2. Which architecture course is best in India?

It depends on where a student is starting from. B.Arch suits those entering directly after school. Working professionals looking to specialise in digital workflows usually get more out of a focused program, such as BuildAmbit’s Full-Stack BIM Professional Course for Architects.

3. Can I join architecture without JEE?

Most B.Arch Admission accept either NATA score or JEE Main scores (Paper 2), hence a NATA score alone is sufficient without appearing for JEE Main.

4. Which architecture is best in India?

There is no single “best” specialisation; it is related to interest. There is a growing demand for residential, sustainable and urban design, and a growing need for digital skills like BIM in any of these areas.

5. Is 12th compulsory for architecture?

For B.Arch admission the candidates must have completed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics or a 10+3 diploma with Mathematics with a valid NATA or JEE Main Paper 2 score.
