Revit rewards typing over clicking. There are a few keyboard shortcuts which can replace multiple clicks to the ribbon and Autodesk’s own reference of Revit 2024 puts the default count as 195 keyboard shortcuts in categories such as Annotate, Modify and View etc. Add in the smaller MEP, structural, and navigation sets, and the total pushes past 200, which is why cheat sheets built from it usually get titled around “200+ Revit shortcuts.”

Most of these commands are generally two letter long, sometimes three, and each command fires a tool the instant it is typed and without having to touch a ribbon at all. The logic behind the letters is typically based on the name of the tool: Wall is WA, Door is DR, Window is WN. Autodesk organizes every shortcut by their location in the interface, and this guide organizes them based on that, beginning with the Revit shortcuts that most beginners reach for first.

Table of Contents

Revit Shortcut Keys by Category

Here are the most common shortcuts for Revit that most new users reach for first, then followed by some groups that will come in handy when the basics start to feel automatic.

Architecture and Modeling

Shortcuts for architecture cover the pieces that are required for any project at the beginning: Walls, Doors, Windows, Rooms, Grids, and Levels. These typically are the first Autodesk Revit shortcut keys a new user learns, as these are the ones that are used on practically every project, regardless of whether it’s a single-family home or an addition to a hospital wing.

Command	Shortcut
Wall	WA
Door	DR
Window	WN
Room	RM
Grid	GR
Level	LL
Reference Plane	RP

RP creates a Reference Plane, Revit’s working guideline that other elements can snap to, but which never appears on a printed sheet. It’s as close as Revit can get to a dedicated Revit reference line shortcut, and it’s useful for laying out geometry prior to having to select an existing wall or grid line. Beginners usually leave it out initially, but begin using it regularly as soon as they realize how much easier it makes a plan look without making guesses.

View and Visibility

Hiding and revealing elements is a separate skill from modeling one, and beginners tend to learn it the hard way, usually by hiding something and then not being able to find it again.

Command	Shortcut
Hide Element	HH
Isolate Element	HI
Visibility/Graphics	VG
Unhide Element	EU
Unhide Category	VU

EU is the unhide shortcut that Revit users end up typing most, since it restores one hidden element at a time. VU does the same job for an entire category in one step, which matters more on larger models where several elements share a hidden category. Together, these five cover most Revit architecture shortcuts tied to visibility control, and they’re worth learning early since visibility mistakes are some of the most common beginner headaches.

Modify and Edit

Editing existing geometry is where a lot of daily time goes, and this set of shortcut keys for Revit covers the basics: moving, copying, aligning, rotating, arraying, and deleting.

Command	Shortcut
Move	MV
Copy	CO
Align	AL
Rotate	RO
Array	AR
Delete	DE

None of these six is complicated on its own, but typing MV instead of hunting for the Move icon adds up over a full day of editing. An array, in particular saves real time once a layout involves repeating an element, a row of columns or a line of parking bays across a set distance or angle.

Annotate and Documentation

Documentation work, tagging, dimensioning, and adding text, has its own set of shortcuts, and beginners usually pick these up once modeling starts turning into drawing sheets rather than a 3D model on its own.

Command	Shortcut
Aligned Dimension	DI
Detail Line	DL
Spot Elevation	EL
Text	TX
Tag by Category	TG

TG is worth learning early, since tagging by category keeps labels consistent across a sheet instead of relying on individual tags placed one at a time.

Systems and MEP

Mechanical, electrical, and plumbing work gets its own category, and while beginners in pure architecture roles may not touch these often, they’re worth knowing if a project involves coordination with MEP teams.

Command	Shortcut
Duct	DT
Pipe	PI
Cable Tray	CT
Lighting Fixture	LF
Mechanical Equipment	ME

Structural Framing

Structural shortcuts sit close to the Architecture group but cover load-bearing elements specifically, the parts of a model that an engineer signs off on rather than a designer.

Command	Shortcut
Structural Beam	BM
Structural Brace	BR
Structural Beam System	BS
Structural Foundation Wall	FT
Reinforcement Numbers	RN

These matter most on projects where architecture and structure share a model, since switching between disciplines quickly depends on knowing both sets of shortcuts rather than just one.

Navigating the Model

Moving around a 3D view without a mouse is its own small skill, and these shortcuts make zooming and orbiting faster once they’re second nature.

Command	Shortcut
Zoom All to Fit	ZA
Zoom to Fit	ZE
Zoom in Region	ZR
Walk Mode	3W
2D Mode	32

Collaboration and Settings

Working on a shared, worksharing-enabled model brings its own set of commands, mostly around syncing changes and managing requests from other team members.

Command	Shortcut
Reload Latest	RL
Editing Requests	ER
Project Units	UN
Sun Settings	SU

Snaps

Snaps control where a line or element locks into place while you draw, and they run quietly in the background of almost every modeling task, whether you notice them or not.

Command	Shortcut
Endpoints	SE
Midpoints	SM
Centers	SC
Nearest	SN
Perpendicular	SP

Counted together, all Revit shortcuts on Autodesk’s list add up to well past 200 once every category above, along with a few smaller ones not listed here, is included. The full list is published as a downloadable PDF on Autodesk’s site, and it’s worth keeping open in a second window until these start to feel automatic. Every shortcut key in Revit, including the ones listed here, can also be reassigned through the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog, which opens with its own key: KS.

Conclusion

None of these shortcuts change what Revit can do. They only make you do it faster. Use a few of the ones you already use through the ribbon, and add a new one every week or two and the two-letter habit grows on it’s own without a special dedicated study session. Once typing WA or MV feels automatic, picking up the last group of categories, structural, MEP or navigation, occurs naturally as a project requires them.

Shortcuts are a good starting point, but they only speed up work you already know how to do. If you want to learn Revit and building information modeling the way they’re used on real projects, explore BuildAmbit’s learning programs, built around practical workflows rather than theory alone.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How many keyboard shortcuts are on this sheet?

Autodesk’s Revit 2024 reference contains a list of 195 default keyboard shortcuts, which are divided by category, such as Annotate, Modify, and View. Bring in the smaller category-specific sets mentioned above, structural, navigation and snaps, and the practical total for “200+ Revit shortcuts” checks out.

2. How do I change a keyboard shortcut in Revit?

Click the View tab, and then click on the Keyboard Shortcuts dialog, or simply type KS. From there you can reassign, remove, or introduce new key combinations on top of anything covered here, which is useful if your office template already uses a different key for a command you know well.

3. Do these shortcuts work in other versions of Revit?

Most core shortcut keys in Revit stay consistent release to release, since Autodesk rarely changes the defaults. Newer versions do add tools with their own keys occasionally, so if you’re on an older or newer build than 2024, it’s worth checking Autodesk’s version-specific PDF for anything unfamiliar before assuming a key is free to reassign.

4. Is the cheat sheet free, and can I print it?

Yes to both. Autodesk’s own reference is free to read, and most guides built from it, including the shortcut breakdowns BuildAmbit shares with learners, are meant to be printed and kept at a desk while the habit forms rather than looked up mid-task every time.
