Key takeaways

Choose a Revit certification that matches your AEC discipline and role.
Use Autodesk Learning Pathways or online courses to build Revit skills.
Consider project-based BIM programs like BuildAmbit for Revit and broader BIM workflows.
Use Autodesk Authorized Training Centers for instructor-led, hands-on training.
Prepare for Autodesk certification exams with practical Revit tasks and project files.

For a formal Revit training and certification, first decide which part of the AEC workflow you work in. You can then explore available training and certification options. Let’s look at how to approach getting a dedicated Revit training certification.

1. Choose Your Discipline

There is no dedicated Revit certification by Autodesk. But it has separate professional and associate-level certifications for each AEC career track. So the first step is picking the one that matches the work you actually do or want to do:

Revit for Architectural Design: This is for architectural modeling, building components, project phasing, project documentation, etc.
Revit for Structural Engineering: For structural framing, foundations, reinforcement, analysis.
Revit for Mechanical and Plumbing Design: This covers HVAC, piping systems, mechanical components and fire protection as well.
Revit for Electrical Design: This covers lighting, power distribution, and circuits.

2. Training Options

There are several ways to learn Revit, depending on how you like to study and how much guidance you want:

Official Autodesk Learning Pathways: Autodesk’s own structured modules, available through the Autodesk Certifications page. A good starting point for learning the software the way Autodesk teaches it.
Online Platforms: LinkedIn Learning, Udemy, and Coursera all have Revit video courses that take you from beginner to advanced at your own pace.
Dedicated BIM Training Programs: Dedicated BIM programs like BuildAmbit’s BIM Professional Programs are also available. These are project-based 7-month live cohorts. Covers Revit training along with ISO 19650, RIBA, clash detection, end-to-end project management skills to real project workflows. Provides Autodesk certification along with their own.
Authorized Training Centers (ATCs): Autodesk-certified partners run classroom and virtual instructor-led training, which suits you if you prefer hands-on guidance and the chance to ask questions live.

3. Autodesk Certification Exam Details

Autodesk certification exams are designed to test practical Revit knowledge. The typical exam details are:

Format: 45 to 60 questions, with a mix of multiple-choice questions and practical task-based answers using downloadable metric or imperial sample project files.
Duration: 120 minutes.
Cost: Around $200 USD at standard retail pricing, although pricing can vary by region and testing partner.
Validity: Certifications are valid for 3 years and are issued through digital credential platforms such as Credly, which can be shared on LinkedIn.
